The local context

'How to respond in a medical emergency where minutes could be the difference between life and death?'

First aid training can help students manage incidents and perform assessments of casualties. The more equipped they are to deal with accidents, illnesses and treatments, the safer they will feel in emergencies. Based on this, AstraZeneca Türkiye partnered with Emergency Medicine Association of Turkey (TATD) and the Foundation for Educating Children (TOÇEV) to offer first aid training in schools across Türkiye.

Our objectives

To train 55,000 high school students in 155 schools across 27 cities in first aid, providing opportunities to practice in order to equip them with the skills required to provide immediate and potentially lifesaving assistance in cases of injury or illness.

Our programme

With the ‘Run first For first aid’ project, face-to-face first aid training is provided to high-school students in various cities in Türkiye. TOÇEV identify the schools with guidance from the provincial directorates of national education, under the Ministry of Education. EMAT’s volunteer emergency medicine specialists provide theoretical and practical training sessions, both 45 minutes long. Using training dummies, life support techniques are taught such as heart massage, artificial respiration in adults and children, the Heimlich maneuver, and airway obstruction due to external objects. The knowledge of students is measured in pre- and post-testing.

Our achievements

Since November 2021, over 30,000 students in 80 schools, across 11 cities have received training.

The programme has also been recognised with the following awards:

- June 2023: Gold Award for ‘Social Responsibility and Sustainability-Healthy Living’, Brandverse Awards 2023 - a notable marketing and communication awards organisation in Türkiye.

- August 2023: Gold Award ‘Communications or PR Campaign of the Year – Healthcare’, Stevie International Business Awards 2023.
