About Girls Belong Here

At AstraZeneca, we reinforce our global commitment of raising awareness on the challenges faced by girls and women in accessing equitable healthcare, while providing opportunities to support young women into positions of leadership.

This annual initiative pioneered by our Young Health Programme (YHP) and partner Plan International UK, aims to raise awareness of the issues perpetuating gender and health inequalities. Held on International Day of the Girl, October 11, the initiative welcomes young women into positions of leadership throughout our offices around the world, supporting their voice in positions of leadership and providing a platform for their ideas and opinions to be heard.

Opportunities like Girls Takeover are incredibly important. I think being shown more about pharmaceuticals, about STEM, for girls, is super, super important. There's less uptake of female employees in pharmaceuticals and in STEM across the board. So, being shown that this is something that you can do, that is achievable, and that people are here to support you is it's this is the first step in making that change.

Our commitment to Girls Belong Here

We are proud to be the largest Global Supporter of #GirlsBelongHere, promoting gender equality and equitable access to healthcare for girls and women. To commemorate International Day of the Girl, a series of Girls Takeover events in over 30 countries around the world will take place, where our leaders welcome young women into the offices to “take over” positions of leadership for the day.

To build the capacities of young healthcare leaders, we have hosted a series of interactive workshops at the One Young World (OYW) Summit. Each year, our YHP supports a number of exceptional young leaders working to prevent NCDs to attend the OYW Summit. Previously, our YHP Impact Fellows participated in engaging sessions on Gender Transformative Programmes, Feminist Leadership and Anti-Racism Principles, Mental Health Research, Patient Centricity, as well as Leadership Development training on topics such as Critical Thinking.

We recognise that in many parts of the world, equitable access to healthcare services are not equal, and that girls and women disproportionately face greater obstacles in making informed decisions that influence their health and their future. We know that creating an environment where girls and women have equal access to opportunities will positively impact their health outcomes, enabling them to thrive in all aspects of life – including in their jobs and communities.

Around the world and across all industries, women are under-represented in positions of senior leadership, this is especially prevalent in STEM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). As a science-led company, we are passionate about inspiring and supporting girls and women to pursue careers in our industry.

Gender equality cannot exist unless women are in positions of power to make informed choices about their health. At AstraZeneca, we are investing in sustainable healthcare solutions that aim to break harmful barriers that continue to hold girls and women back from accessing healthcare information and services. Together with our partners, and through the passion and determination of our employees around the world, we are working to make the most meaningful difference to people and the communities in which they live by building more resilient health systems for all.
