The local context

According to the World Health Organization, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Brazil account for 74% of all deaths, with a 17% risk of premature death between 30-70 years. Cardiovascular diseases and cancers are the most prevalent causes of deaths in Brazil, accounting for 28% and 18% of mortality respectively.1

Our objectives

To improve young people’s health and wellbeing by strengthening their knowledge of NCD prevention, building their capacity to make informed health decisions, enhancing youth-friendly services, and advocating for supportive policies around disease prevention.

Our programme

Implemented by Plan International Brazil, the programme was designed to:

  • Empower young people by building their knowledge and skills in NCD prevention, enabling informed health decisions through peer education and community outreach.
  • Mobilise schools, families and community stakeholders to support NCD prevention and create enabling environments for young people’s health.
  • Strengthen health services to better respond to the needs of young people.
  • Advocate for policies that support NCD prevention and promote young people’s overall health and wellbeing.

Our achievements

From 2020 to 2025, the programme achieved the following:

  • Strengthened young people’s capacity for NCD prevention by training 296 peer educators, who reached 31,221 young people through peer-led sessions in schools and communities.
  • Expanded access to NCD prevention information and positive health messaging, indirectly reaching over 3.6 million young people through social media, a YouTube web series, online engagement and community events.
  • Mobilised and equipped key influencers to create supportive environments for young people’s health, reaching 542 teachers, 647 parents and caregivers through training, and training 382 health professionals to better respond to young people’s needs.
  • Raised community-wide awareness of healthy lifestyle behaviours, indirectly reaching more than 1.8 million community members through mass media activities, helping to foster a supportive environment for NCD prevention.

Our partner
