The local context

In Sweden there has been a decline in mental health in young people.

The challenge is to make information about mental health development, mental health conditions and the possible solutions, easily accessible and understandable to young people and to those who support them.

Our objectives

The Young Health Programme in Sweden focuses on improving mental health and emotional well-being among young people.

We do this by directing resources for our community support towards this area through collaborations with non-profit organisations for improved youth health.

Our focus

  • Increase awareness among young people, their parents, and professionals working in this field through communication about mental health
  • Provide direct support through volunteering
  • Be part of the dialogue about mental health in society

Our programme & achievements

Boost4Life

Together with Mentor Sweden, AstraZeneca is running a programme, Boost4Life, to strengthen the mental health and well-being of young people in Sweden. Many young people say they lack role models in their daily lives. Research shows that the lack of role models has a negative impact on young people's future outlook, creates uncertainty, and can lead to mental health issues. Through the programme, AstraZeneca aims to inspire and guide young people by having volunteers from AstraZeneca and staff from Mentor Sweden meet with middle school students from three different schools in Gothenburg, Stockholm and Södertälje for discussions and activities.

Mind Your Teens

We have produced a film series about the teenage brain, 'Mind Your Teens', which is available in Swedish schools. Although there is a lot of information about how the teenage brain works, it is challenging to disseminate this knowledge to society. The purpose of the film series is to provide young people and those who support them (including their families and schools) with increased understanding of mental health development and to demonstrate opportunities for those affected by mental health problems.

So far, the films have been downloaded from the internet over 40,000 times, and over 30,000 copies of the films have been distributed to Swedish schools, reaching over 1 million students.

BRIS - Children's Rights in Society

Our support for BRIS has enabled them to develop targeted interventions for children where a parent has committed suicide, promote health initiatives around physical activity, produce supportive materials aimed at schools, and contribute to BRIS' national support line for children, which has over 50,000 supportive contacts with children and young people each year.

Employee volonteering

The YHP provides an opportunity for AstraZeneca employees to engage in volunteer work to help non-profit organisations focusing on young people. Every year our employees participate in various volunteer assignments organised in collaboration with Volontärbyrån.
