The local context
People with disabilities are 6.5 times more likely to develop heart disease, 3.5 times more likely to develop diabetes, 2.3 times more likely to have high blood pressure, engage in less physical activity, and have shorter life expectancy than people without disabilities.1
Our objectives
To increase the knowledge of healthy living and encourage positive behaviour change in 400 young people with disabilities aged 18-34, each year.
To help change perceptions of young people with disabilities and improve their health and economic opportunities.
Our programme
This initiative builds upon the successful ‘Milestone’ programme run from 2017-2020 and is delivered through 10 weekly workshops in which young people with disabilities learn about developing, practicing and sustaining healthy habits, with an emphasis on nutrition and physical fitness.
The workshops are led by people with disabilities who also act as role models, increasing the likelihood of a change in participants’ behaviour. They are held in-person in community centres, government housing facilities, or sheltered work environments.
The workshops are accompanied by information manuals that are adapted for a variety of disabilities and cultural sensitivities.
Volunteering
We expect 40% of our colleagues in Israel to support the programme as volunteers, for example as mentors and assisting in the training sessions.
Our partners
Israel’s leading social organisation strives to build and develop a nationwide network of sustainable local communities, which contribute to the shaping of a strong, resilient and pluralistic society in Israel.
