Youth for Solidarity and Development in the Great Lakes (JSD Grand Lacs): strengthening nutritional and food security for youth in South Kivu (Democratic Republic of Congo)

Based in Bukavu, DR Congo, JSD Grands Lacs participates in local community development projects with a focus on gender equality and supporting vulnerable members of society. Facing numerous and recurrent food crises and wars, the Fizi territory is a particular area of concern for the organisation, with food security reports revealing that there are an estimated 5 million youth suffering from acute malnutrition, 12% of which are considered to be severe.

Recent circumstances within the Fizi territory have also had a significant toll upon the agricultural sector, which is relied on heavily for the community’s survival. As a result, the focus of the project is based around enhancing agroecological practices, which will involve activity such as facilitating access to agricultural inputs, modernising agro-pastoral practices and promoting healthy nutritional practices to local youths.
