The local context
There are over 171 million adolecents (aged 10 - 19) in China today, accounting for 12% of the population. Supporting their health and wellbeing is key1.
Whilst many young people are located in the larger cities, there are significant numbers still in rural areas with limited access to healthcare education and suport.
In addition, more than 2 million children are autistic, requiring societal care to help them achieve a sense of wellbeing and a place in society.
Our objectives
To improve the health and wellbeing of young people through awareness and education on the contributing factors to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as air and water pollution, unhealthy eating, tobacco use and physical inactivity, with the aim of empowering them to reduce their risks.
In parallel the focus for autistic children is to improve their sense of wellbeing through care and companionship, recognising they are a vulnerable group.
Our focus
Empowering young people aged 10-24, through education around health and well-being behavioural risks, to help them prevent non-communicable diseases later in life.
Our programme
YHP China focuses on providing education and awareness of the contributing factors that cause NCDs in later life and how these can be avoided by adopting a healthier lifestyle. The programme uses training materials and a series of engaging games and in-school activities to deliver key messages to young people.
In parallel, through our employee volunteer network we care for autistic youth through activities such as companionship, to increase their sense of wellbeing.
We work with the Horizon Corporate Volunteer Consultancy who provide volunteer and operational support.
We have also worked with the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries to deliver training to school doctors in rural areas and engage local government officials to enhance the impact of our work.
Our achievements
Since the programme's launch in 2013 more than 260 YHP activities have taken place in over 30 cities across China.
