Ageing populations, a surge in chronic and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), under-investment in healthcare and the climate crisis are all straining health systems globally. As a result, healthcare is becoming more fragmented, reactive and overly dependent on emergency and hospital services. Even advanced health systems struggle to deliver consistently, leaving millions without timely, effective and integrated care. Health systems overwhelmed by today's needs are unprepared for tomorrow's demands. The time to strengthen them is now.
Building resilient health systems requires partnership between public and private sectors. Through initiatives like the PHSSR, we are turning evidence into action, supporting governments to strengthen health systems, expand access, and improve outcomes. By sustaining investment in healthcare and acting earlier to diagnose and treat disease, health systems can enable people to live healthier today and for generations to come.
Our approach to health systems resilience
Building resilient health systems requires a fundamental shift from treating advanced illness to prevention and early action. Together with partners, we are tackling NCDs through early detection and prevention strategies that deliver better patient outcomes while controlling costs and strengthening sustainability. This depends on addressing the root causes of chronic diseases, enabling earlier access to guideline-directed medical therapy and integrating digital innovation.
We are co-creating solutions that slow disease progression, reduce hospital admissions and prevent premature deaths, all while helping healthcare professionals deliver more sustainable care. AI and advanced technologies enable us to identify at-risk patients earlier, personalise treatment and respond more efficiently to patient needs.
Science and innovation power our progress but achieve their greatest impact through collaboration. By working with policymakers, academia, NGOs and the private sector, we can tackle health system challenges together, learning from each other's unique strengths to transform care for all — now and in the future.
Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience (PHSSR)
Together with the London School of Economics (LSE) and the World Economic Forum (WEF), we established the Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience (PHSSR). A non-profit, multi-sector, global collaboration, PHSSR focuses on policy change to improve global health, by building more sustainable and resilient health systems. Active in over 36 countries, this public-private collaboration has built and continually expands a significant body of work on global health systems sustainability and resilience.
Having published over 30 robust reports and engaged with more than 100 policymakers, the PHSSR has catalysed worldwide policy changes that strengthen health systems and enhance care for millions of patients.
