Everyone deserves the opportunity to live their healthiest life. We aim to close healthcare gaps among underserved patients so more people can benefit from innovative medicines.
Health outcomes are shaped by multiple, intersecting factors including social, environmental and genetic determinants, that amplify inequities. Those at highest risk of disease often lack timely diagnosis and care, whether in high, middle or low-income countries.
Our vision is to improve health equity across all healthcare systems and income levels by removing barriers to healthcare to give everyone the chance to be as healthy as possible.
Quality and timely healthcare remains out of reach for too many individuals across low, middle, and high-income countries. Barriers to screening, early detection, precision diagnosis, and treatment affect many, compounded by gender, geography, income and environmental factors. By partnering to close healthcare gaps, we can improve health equity in high burden diseases, including cancer, lung, cardiovascular, renal, metabolic, and rare diseases.
At AstraZeneca, we have a mission to close healthcare gaps to improve health outcomes and advance equity so more people across the globe can live their healthiest lives. By 2030, we aim to reach 1 billion people — 400 million representing underserved groups — and enable patients to benefit from our innovative medicines in more than 125 countries.
Our approach to health equity
We’re embedding health equity across our enterprise, from our research and development to the delivery of care and community engagement.
We leverage data to understand and address factors impacting health outcomes among different populations. By partnering with governments, health systems and communities, we aim to accelerate health equity – bridging healthcare gaps, promoting healthier behaviours, enabling early disease detection and improving access to treatments for those who need them.
Our work spans across three areas:
Science
We focus on ensuring our genomics data and research, as well as clinical trials, include people from all backgrounds so that our medicines are effective for a broad range of people and represent those most affected by disease.
Healthcare delivery
We partner with governments and healthcare providers to support more equitable delivery of healthcare – from improving awareness and education, screening, and earlier detection to access to medicines.
Community investment
We are addressing the root causes of health inequities by helping to prevent disease, promote health and science education, and support health needs in underserved communities through partnerships with non-profit organisations worldwide.
