Our approach to sustainable procurement

Through Sustainable Procurement, we embed sustainable practices into our end-to-end processes to build business resilience – supporting suppliers to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, promoting ethical behavior, and addressing impacts and dependencies on nature. Our approach enables us to innovate together on shared challenges and unlock supplier progress on sustainability.

As part of our approach to sustainability and to supporting suppliers in meeting our Code of Conduct, we are partnering across the industry to set consistent standards and provide tools and solutions to support the sustainability and decarbonisation of our sector. These initiatives include the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) Health Systems Task Force, the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative (PSCI), Energize, the EcoVadis Responsible Health Initiative, Activate and Converge.

Our focus areas

Decarbonising the supply chain

Our Scope 3 GHG emissions account for around 98% of our global emissions footprint. To address these emissions, we are driving decarbonisation across our value chain. Our suppliers play an important role in helping us to progress toward our science-based target to achieve net zero by 2045. For more information see our Climate change page.

Ethical spend

We aim to deliver positive impact across our value chain for workforces, communities and the environment. Through our positive sourcing program we partner with EcoVadis to assess our suppliers’ environmental, ethical, and social performance. For our ESG rankings and ratings see our Sustainability resources. Our Sustainable Use and Sourcing of Raw Materials supports our efforts to drive positive impact in our use of raw materials.

Supplier diversity

Through our Supplier Diversity program we aim to accelerate innovation and our positive impact on societies by providing equal opportunities for small businesses, supporting their growth and development.
