FAQs about Creating Health Access for Next Generation Equity (CHANGE)
How do I apply for a grant?
Eligible organizations will need to complete and submit the online application available on our CHANGE page by 5:00 p.m. ET on May 5, 2026 to be considered.
What are your eligibility requirements for grants?
To be considered for a CHANGE grant in 2026, organizations must provide services in one of the following locations in which AstraZeneca has a footprint: California, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts and Texas, as well as be a US-based, nonprofit organization with a 501(c)(3) designation, public school, government entity or municipal institution that is eligible to accept tax-deductible, charitable contributions and has a total revenue of $12 million or less in its most recent tax year. Organizations that have a 509(a)(3) designation or a total revenue greater than $12 million in their most recent tax year are not eligible for funding.
Please note that all 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations also have an IRS 509(a) designation. If your organization has been designated as a 509(a)(3) supporting organization by the IRS, it is ineligible for funding. The IRS designation can normally be found in the organization’s IRS designation letter. Some nonprofit organizations, particularly older ones, could have a separate IRS 509(a) ruling letter.
The organization should be engaged in charitable work at the community level with a focus on improving access to quality healthcare for populations experiencing health disparities. For additional information, please view the detailed criteria.
Are there any restrictions for grants?
The AstraZeneca Foundation does NOT fund grant applications that propose to use grant funds for the following:
- Capital campaigns/investments (new buildings, building repairs, endowments);
- Research or clinical trials; and
- Medical education and/or training (i.e., training necessary to obtain a degree or license) for healthcare professionals that is more than incidental and that is the primary focus of the grant’s activities. Incidental expenses for medical education and training may be included in the budget.
The AstraZeneca Foundation does NOT support:
- Organizations or initiatives outside the United States or its territories;
- Individuals;
- For-profit organizations;
- Endowments;
- Journals or advertising;
- Political causes, lobbying, fraternal or social organizations;
- Religious organizations whose activities are not open to the general public; and
- Nonprofit organizations that discriminate on the basis of age, race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, military service, veteran status or disability.
Additional restrictions are updated for each application cycle.
How are applications evaluated?
Applications are reviewed through a multitiered grant review process, with the AstraZeneca Foundation Board of Trustees making the final decision. Our grant reviewers assess each application against the funding criteria, with a focus on supporting organizations with applications that:
- Align with the Foundation’s funding priorities;
- Leverage an innovative approach to improve access to quality healthcare for communities with urgent, unmet health needs;
- Engage community members and community organizations in meaningful ways to guide implementation decisions;
- Demonstrate capacity to successfully implement the approach and deliver meaningful outcomes;
- Include a well-defined budget; and
- Demonstrate a commitment to sustaining their approach beyond initial funding.
If awarded a grant, what are the reporting requirements?
Organizations selected for funding will need to submit regular progress reports and summaries as set forth in the AstraZeneca Foundation’s Letter of Agreement. In 2026, this will include:
- Mid-year progress report (due in May 2027) and
- Year-end progress report (due in November 2027).
Grant awardees will need to report their progress on the goals and activities they have identified in their application. During the grant year, funded organizations, Foundation staff and evaluation partners will co-create a reporting and evaluation framework to collectively measure the cohort’s impact on improvements in access to quality healthcare.
If an organization is awarded a grant, what support can be expected?
The AstraZeneca Foundation is committed to providing capacity-building support to help organizations maximize and sustain their impact. Through a Community Advisory Board format, funded organizations meet regularly (virtually, with some in-person opportunities) with Foundation staff, evaluation partners and fellow grant awardees to foster meaningful connections, receive training on focused topics and participate in knowledge-sharing. Foundation staff and evaluation partners are also available to provide one-on-one support based on the needs of grant awardees.
