Proteinuria as a target for chronic kidney disease |

22 May 2024
Elevated levels of protein in your urine are associated with an increased risk of kidney function loss over time, leading to chronic kidney disease (CKD). Residual protein in the urine remains one of the strongest risk markers of renal disease progression. Research presented at European Renal Association (ERA) Annual Congress demonstrates a novel method to help identify patients with proteinuria using machine learning from a patient’s Electronic Health Record, without needing to take a urine test at all. We also show that people with more advanced kidney disease, as measured by their proteinuria levels, are more susceptible to hyperkalaemia and loss of kidney function and call for next wave innovations to address this unmet need. |
